This was used on the Musketoon (carbine) of 1829 (modified), 1842, 1846, 1853. Initially, the locking lug worked with a long-leaf spring on the hilt. This was replaced in 1859 with an internal coil spring. These bayonets are increasingly uncommon, not to be confused with the 1866 Chassepot bayonet, to which they have a passing similarity. Typically these weapons would have been carried by artillery units and other support elements, not regular infantry or cavalry, to my knowledge. It would appear to have all its original arsenal marks intact throughout the piece. It is engraved on the back of the scabbard (in abbreviated form) 'Manufacture Imperiale de Chatellerault'. The numbers on the hilt and scabbard do not match. The brass hilt has a natural age patina. There is some minor corrosion on the ball fitting at the end of the scabbard and on the muzzle ring of the hilt. There is a minor crease midway on the scabbard face. The scabbard has been carefully cleaned and hand polished. |
