This is the 1911 pattern cap badge in white metal. A similar badge was struck in gilding metal. This design replaced the earlier one of a sword seated on a coronet(Lord Middleton's crest). In a smaller form, the QMO version was also used as a collar dog. The SY was first raised in 1794, disbanded in 1848 and later raised again in 1901. It amalgamated with the Sussex Yeomanry in 1922, forming two batteries of field guns as part of a four-battery unit, the 98th (Surrey & Sussex Yeomanry) Brigade, RFA. It served with distinction in both world wars. The lugs have been removed and pin fittings substituted, but in this case the needle is missing. This may have been done to convert it into a sweetheart broach. |
