This slightly naive portrait (19 x 29 cms) - of one of the staff officers (probably a General) of Tsar Alexander I's suite on his visit to London in 1814 - is accurate in all its essential uniform details. The officer's face is sufficiently detailed to suggest a specific individual. The gold oak leaves on the collar follow French and Prussian design for Generals and the facings on the bottom of the jacket are hidden by his buff gauntlets, but these would probably be red with gold bullion decoration. He is wearing two orders, one of which from its cross shape could be the order of St George. The other is an unknown breast star. The sword appears to be a solid gilt bronze sabre-type. |
