This fine silver badge (Birmingham hallmarked and maker marked for Hobson & Sons of Lexington Street, London W) was made for an Indian Rifle regiment with a most distinguished pedigree. Raised in 1775, in 1889 it became the 4th Regiment Bombay Infantry, in 1903 becoming the 104th Wellesley's Rifles. This badge (9.1 cm from crown to base) is missing its securing bolts to the reverse, but is otherwise in fine condition, mounted with a guelphic crown in honour of the Rifle Brigade. It has all the battle honours you would expect for this regiment, the last one being for Kandahar (granted in the 1880s). (In the photo, the backplate looks a little dark, but that is simply the lighting. It is in reality polished silver, as you would expect.) |
