Title Royal Navy document box
Nationality British
Period c 1830
Price £75.00

This little tin box would have held a Royal Navy warrant document for Warrant Officers. As far as I know they were introduced into RN service in about 1820. The Admiralty seal is impressed in the body of the box, which, along with the lid, are both constucted of tin with lead solder seams.

I think these boxes would only have been issued to the 'standing triumvirate' of senior WOs, who were Admiralty appointments, viz Boatswain, Gunner, Carpenter. The Petty Officers held their appointment directly from their ship's CO, who had the power to disrate them, unlike the WOs.

There is zinc finish throughout, marred here and there by spot rust, but generally speaking it is in excellent shape for its age.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
