Title Mediterranean knife
Nationality Sardinian
Period c 1760
Sold

This splendid example, with a 12" blade, has a silver-mounted horn grip inlaid with mother-of-pearl, silver straps, and copper and silver piquet work. The forte of the blade is inlaid, on one side, with the tree of life in silver and, on the other, with an angel blowing a trumpet and a mythical bird amongst fruits and foliage.

Over the many years of handling this type of knife, this is the finest example I have seen. The scabbard has its original leather (now varnished), the silver mounts have a little age distress and damage, but are essentially intact, and engraved on the reverse top locket the motif 'G.C.' below a Maltese cross.
