These little gems are each marked 'sterling' on the reverse and measure exactly 41mm high. This pattern was introduced in 1911 when the Princess Mary's Own became Queen Mary's Regiment. They replaced the earlier pattern of the sword mounted on a coronet (the crest of Lord Middleton, who raised the regiment). The SY was first raised in 1794, disbanded in 1848 and later raised again in 1901. It amalgamated with the Sussex Yeomanry in 1922, forming two batteries of field guns as part of a four-battery unit, the 98th (Surrey & Sussex Yeomanry) Brigade, RFA. It served with distinction in both world wars. These are in superb condition, with a little minor tarnishing. |
