Title KuK enamel commemorative medalet
Nationality Austrian
Period 1915
Sold

This high quality enamel item celebrates Italy's entry into WW1 (on the side of the Western allies), Italy being the little green figure about to plunge a dagger into the back of the Central Alliance soldiers (Hungary, Germany and Austria), the lightning bolt suggesting the vengeance of God on those who broke faith.

The Central Alliance considered that Italy had broken faith by declaring war on them when her original treaty obligations were to stick by them. The colours of the uniform denote Hungary as the hussar with the pistol (blue and red), Germany in the middle in field grey, and Austria on the right in a light blue uniform.

This was probably worn as a fob on a watch chain.

The condition is excellent throughout, the enamel being virtually perfect.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!

I am more and more pleased with the sword, and am wondering whether to do an article on it...
