This nice medal, with a view of Edinburgh city surmounted by the castle on the reverse with the motto 'The Westerns / 23rd November 1803' on the obverse, was awarded as a commemorative item to an infantry volunteer unit raised at the termination of the peace of Amiens (1802) between France and GB in 1803. The medal would have been struck, presumably, on the raising of the regiment. The ribbon would have been blue with red edges. This was a volunteer unit raised in or near Edinburgh. It was issued in pewter as well as in silver. It is a nice, professionally die-struck product of undoubted period provenance, unlike the bulk of the Volunteer medals of this era, which are engraved specimens, many of which were made a full 100 years after the original date (ie Victorian pastiche/fakes). Its condition is GVF, the reverse showing considerable contact marking from wear, especially in the plain field representing the sky above the town. |
