This would have been awarded from 1882 onwards to Serbians who had distinguished themselves in their country's cause and also to foreigners who had aided the Serbian cause. The 5th class is the lowest grade of the order. Beneath this, they simply issued medals. This medal is in good shape, with its original ribbon and box. The enamel appears to be perfect, although there is a tiny imperfection visible on the bottom arm of the cross. The medal was made by French jewellers, whose details are printed on the silk liner to the lid of the box and who are still in business. The fabric covering of the box is in reasonable shape, except on one corner where it has lifted somewhat from the frame, of which a small corner is missing. The Serbian royal arms are displayed on top of the box, now green but I suspect formerly gold, with a class of the award underneath in Roman numerals. |
