This is a rare variant of the Royal Humane Society medal for successfully saving life, issued between 1774 and 1867. It would seem that the Bristol variant was instituted in 1807, according to the date on the exergue. The sculptor signs himself 'T.H.' for T. Halliday. It is, sadly, uninscribed, as it would have left the Mint. I have never seen a Bristol variant before, so it is probably reasonably scarce. The condition is GVF, having lain most of its life undisturbed in its original case, which is also in good condition, the satin lining of the box lid being intact and in good shape. There is also a milled edge to both sides, which is still nice and sharp. The medal is just under 5cm in diameter, while the box is just under 8cm square. |
